Jeanette Giroud grew up in the beautiful Chittering Valley along with her four siblings, mother and grandmother. Her Grandfather, James Sandow took great pride in his prize-winning and export-quality citrus fruit and the Lower Chittering community still benefits from his generous donation of land to build the local school building and hall (no longer there) where many Saturday Night Dances were held, much to the delight of the local girls when visited by the handsome air force officers. He also donated the land for the Lower Chittering Recreation and Community Centre which still stands today. Jeanette’s Grandmother Olive Ruby Sandow, was the first Post Mistress in Western Australia and became an important postal link, especially during the war and post-war years. Her tireless work to the community earned her a place on the Pioneer Women’s Memorial roll of honour. The little Post Office, although somewhat derelict, still stands today as a memorial to the past. Sadly, the little cottage next door where Jeanette, her mother and siblings lived was vandalised and burnt to the ground. What better place to grow up, running free and enjoying nature at its best? Jeanette has fond memories of her long bush walks to her Uncle Reginald’s property and her Aunty Dorry’s home at Citrus Heights. She was in awe of the beauty of the natural bushland, the prolific wildflowers which grew abundantly on the roadside verges and the many native animals that lived in the region. It was this inspiration that stayed with her on her journey through life as an educator and artist and still informs her work today.
Jeanette's studio is in the loft of her residence in North Fremantle. She is sharing a nature studio with daughter Marnie Giroud at Djidi Djidi Reserve for this open studios event.
She will be working live and people are welcome to watch and ask questions.
